Wallingford Head - Great Start to Henley's Winter Season

The 33rd Wallingford long distance sculls took place last saturday in fine conditions with bright sunshine and a moderate following wind. The 4000 metre race from Cholsey Ferry to the Oxford University Boat Club at Wallingford marina is split into two divisions because of the number of entries and to allow scullers to double up in other categories. Henley had one entry in the morning division, a Veteran F double scull that completed the course in the fastest adjusted time with the veteran handicap.

In the afternonn division Henley RC had it's junior squad out in force with three quad sculls and twenty single scullers competing in six different categories, winning three of them.

The first win for Henley came in Womens Junior 15 Quad Sculls with Gemma Hall, Florence Lock, Lizzie Blair, Hermione Lake at stroke and cox Lauren Hillyer beating eight other crews in their category including overtaking two boys J15 quads. The course is notoriously difficult with many bays and some sharp bends making steering very awkward with the addition of overtaking the slower scullers while keeping inside the buoys marking the course.

In the Junior 18 single sculls, the biggest category with 60 competitors, Henley was particularly successful with Chris Clark coming first with the fastest time closely followed by Drew Ford in second place and Alex Walker in third.

Not to be outdown Chantal Cummings won WJ 16 single sculls for the junior women, also beating all the WJ 18 scullers except the actual winner of the category.
