Gold and Silver Medals for Henley RC in
National Schools Head Races
The Henley Schools/Junior Sculling Head took place last Wednesday week but with the venue moved to Dorney Lake because of the adverse river conditions that have resulted in the cancellation of several long distance head races on the Thames so far this year. Henley entered four crews that all did very against the top rowing schools in the country. The best result was achieved by the Womens Junior 15 Coxed Quad who came second, winning the Silver medal, out of a total of 42 crews in the category. Henley had a fast start and quickly passed two crews but then found themselves sculling in a vacuum with no crew to race against for the next 1,500 metres to the finish. Sophie Lloyd did particularly well coxing her first ever race and was delighted to win a medal, the first time out. The Womens Junior 14 Octuple also had a very good scull but were very unlucky to miss out on a medal by just 4/100 of a second. Meanwhile the boys in Junior 15 Coxed Quads came a good 7th out of 37 crews and the Junior 14 boys in an Octuple came 8th out of 31 in the category. The following day the National Schools/Junior Head took place for sweep oars on the Tideway from Chiswick Bridge to Putney, a distance of 4 1/4 miles. Henley girls repeated the success they had last year in eights by winning Womens Juniot Coxed Fours in a record time of 20:12 minutes. Coach, Chris Boothroyd was very pleased with this second win both in record times in two years against the best rowing schools. He said the cox, Alice Skinner steered a good course overtaking seven crews and they all rowed intelligently rating an average of 30 over the distance.
