MARLOW REGATTA

Last week end was one of the busiest of the regatta season with Henley Womens Regatta, Marlow Regatta at Dorney and Thames Valley Park at Reading with Henley Rowing Club doing well in all three.

At Marlow regatta the coxless four and Wyfold entry for the Royal Regatta of Robbie McGow, Mike Lambourn, Nick Rushton and stroke Elliot Cole did particularly well winning Senior 2 Coxless Fours on Saturday and pushing London Rowing Club, Wyfold Cup favourites, hard in Senior 1 Coxless Fours on Sunday. Henley were ¼ up at the 500 metre mark but steering problems let them down in the in the second 500 and London finally won by about a length.

In Quad sculls Richard Guiver, Charles Friend, David Read and stroke Nick Friend won Senior 2 Quads and came 4th in the final of Elite Quads. They were the fastest non-composite crew in the event and they are Henley RC's entry for Mens Quad Sculls at Henley Royal. Both these crews are sponsored by WARC, World Advertising Research Centre whose generosity has provided finance for equipment and support for the athletes.

Henley were also involved in two composite crews. Jonny Smith-Willis and David Lambourn rowing in a Leander/Henley composite won Elite Eights beating Cambridge University into second place. This crew is part of the British challenge for the Ladies Plate at Henley Royal. It is also the first time these two clubs have combined to compete together at a regatta. In the other composite, Jasper Hassell and Adam Wood have teamed up with two from Thames RC and qualified for the final of Elite Coxless Fours. They are entered in the Visitors Cup at HRR.

Henley has entered two Britannia Cup Coxed Fours for HRR but neither competed at Marlow to concentrate on training instead for HRR.
