Henley Girls row for England in the Home
Countries International Regatta
Following their success at the National Championships in the Junior girls eight five Henley Rowing Club girls were selected along with three girls from Maidnhead RC to make up the England eight for the Home Countries International that took place last Saturday. The five Henley girls selected where Orla Millar, Kelly Whittaker, Kate Chapman, Ailsa Buck and cox Raffie Varley. The Home Countries is contested by England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and each country takes it in turn to host the match. This year it was hosted by Ireland in the fantastic setting of Inniscarra Lake near Cork. The match is split into four categories with a team prize for Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Senior Men and Senior Women. Whilst only winning crews receive medals the finishing positions are important as these receive points for the Team Prize which all leads to a very competitive match and some very hard fought racing. Not surprisingly being on home waters the Irish fielded a very strong team and this showed in the girls eight race where Ireland got out to a very early lead which they continued to build on right through to the finish. The Henley/Maidenhead composite whilst not able to match the Irish did hold off the other crews and built steadily through the race to take the points for second place.
