The Fours Head
The Head of the River Fours took place on Saturday with 500 crews rowing the 4'/a mile Boat Race course from Mortlake to Putney. The standard as always was exceptionally high with several international crews and many international oarsmen taking part. Henley
Rowing Club entered eight men's and women's crews. The Henley coach, Ian
Desmond was delighted with the results for the senior men particularly the
Senior 2 Quadruple Scull of Mike Lambourn, David Read, Dan Marett and
Richard Guiver recording the 10th fastest time overall, the highest ever
finish for Henley at the Fours Head. It wasn't quite fast enough, however to
win the division which was won by Oxford Brookes who were just three seconds
faster. David
Read at two, had distinguished himself at Henley Sculls Head race the
previous week by recording the fastest time of the day in single sculls, a
feat last achieved for Henley by Lee Brown in 1973. Henley
again missed out on winning a pennant in Senior 1 Coxless Fours where Rob
Griffiths, Ben Lewis, Charlie Friend and Nick Friend came in second, a mere
one second behind London Rowing Club. The Senior 2 Coxed Four also did well
coming fourth in their division behind Oxford and Cambridge Universities. These
results proved that Henley were contesting alongside some of the best crews
in the race. Other good results were Henley's Junior Women Emily Derrig, Kate Chapman, Chantel Cummings and Jenny Arnold, who came second in Quadruple Sculls and Henley's Junior Boys, Tom Pocock, Chris Clarke, Drew Ford and Peter Wagner who came sixth out of 30 crews in Quadruple Sculls.
