Wallingford Long Distance Sculls
Henley Rowing Clubs junior squad had a good start to the new rowing season notching up two wins at last Saturdays Wallingford Long Distance Sculling race as they chase last seasons junior total of over 50 wins. The race is in two divisions and is held over a 4000 metres course from Cholsey Ferry to the OUBC boathouse at Wallingford Marina and contains a number of bends that make it a testing course for the coxless boats. Both wins came from the junior girls in quadruple sculls. The J16 Quad of Raffie Varley (bow steers), Orla Millar, Ellen Anthony, and Emily Derrig won their division comfortably and also beat a number of older crews to be the second fastest girls quad. The second win came from the girls J15 quad of Beccy Clarke, Pippa Whittaker, Georgie Dodwell, Maria Tross and cox Jess Brooker.
Jenny
Arnold recovering from recent illness sculled well to finish third in the
girls J16 Single Sculls event but was not quite fit enough to take the top
place. Two J14 girls Quads also competed but a lack of race experience saw
the girls not quite going off hard enough from the start and this cost the
faster of the two crews a medal, coming second and losing by just 4
seconds to local rivals Maidenhead.
The
Junior boys the J15 Quad raced very well to finish 2nd against a very
experienced Windsor Boys crew that have raced together for the last year
and are unbeaten, so great credit goes to the boys in this newly formed
novice quad, they can only keep improving.
In Junior boys J18 Singles Sculls, all
racing in a new category this year and racing boys a year or more older
than them, Chrsi Clark finished a respectable seventh out of 56 boys,
the other boys also did well and have made great improvements. Finally,
in Junior boys 16 Single Sculls every one raced execptionally well,
Tom Pocock finishing seventh and Alex Hall finishing 22nd out of a large
entry of boys, a very good result.
This
weekend it is the Pairs Head at Putney and Henley Rowing Club have entered
four Double Sculls and three Pairs for this fascinating opener of the
season for the senior men.
