Junior Inter Regional Regatta Following trials some weeks ago Henley Rowing Club had 10 athletes (eight girls and two boys) selected to compete at the Junior Inter Regional Regatta. The regatta is contested between the 12 regions that the Amateur Rowing Association divides the country into with Henley being part of the Thames Upriver division which is those clubs on the stretch of the Thames from Hampton Court up to Oxford. The regatta its self was held last week on the multi lane course at Nottingham and raced over 1500 metres with the fastest six crews from the heats going to the grand final and the six slowest crews going to the petite final and with the divisions being awarded points, from 12 for the winning crew down to 1 for the 12th placed crew. The boys from Henley where Alex Hall and Tom Pocock who competed in the J16 double sculls finishing 2nd in the petite final and picking up 5 points for the division. The girls J16 four of Alice Skinner, Raffie Varley, Kelly Whittaker and Orla Millar finished fifth in the grand final having dropped a couple of places in the last 200 metres of the race. Raffie and Alice also competed in the J16 pairs and in this event finished in bronze medal position having rowed and raced exceptional well. This was a very good result for perhaps two of the slightest girls in the event who where only a couple of lengths down on the winners but where some 17 seconds clear of the fourth placed crew. Winning gold medal and picking up 12 points for the division was the girls J16 quad of Pippa Whittaker, Chantal Cummings, Jenny Arnold and Emily Derrig. In the final the quad led from the start and whilst initially where pressed by the quad from Thames Downriver by 500 metres the girls had a clear lead which they continued to build on to finish three lengths up. Helped by the good results from the Henley crews the Thames Upriver division won the overall regatta and both the boys and girls trophies. This weekend the Henley Junior crews will be competing at the National Schools Regatta.
