Henley Sculls Last
Saturday competitors and spectators were able to enjoy Henley Sculls in
comparative comfort, as the forecast of heavy rain did not materialise. The
day started at 11 a.m. with Division 1 for quads and doubles. Henley's
senior men are still riding high from their Thames Cup triumph at this
year's Henley Royal Regatta. Three from that eight were in the club's Senior
2 Quad - D. Read, M. Lambourn, and R. Guiver with D. Marrett, covered the
3,000 metre upstream course in 10 minutes 33 seconds to win their category
and record the fastest time of the day. Another
win came from the Women's Senior 3 Quad of K. Boothroyd, L. Leoniades, K.
Pankhurst and H. Read, with a time of 12.36. Not
to be outdone the Women's
Junior 15 Coxed Quad of A. Buck, A. Whitaker, R. Clarke, C. Cummings and M.
Wheal also won, but they had to share with Lady Eleanor Holles School who
matched their 13.38. Henley's
Elite Womens Quad, E Mann, C Hocking, S Causby and K Holland, had a terrific
tussle with Upper Thames, returning a time of 12.11, just one second
slower than their local rivals. R. Ingledew, K. Ramsey, N. Ashcroft and V
Brierley gave Upper Thames their only win in Division 1. Wallingford
won Women's J16 Doubles, beating Henley by another frustrating second.
Henley crews came second in four other categories, Men's Elite Doubles,
Men's Senior 3 Quads, Men's Junior 15 Coxed Quads and Women's Junior 14
Coxed Quads all good performances but none good enough. Divisions
2 and 3 were for single sculls only. Scullers competed in their own
categories and, where appropriate, their times were considered for team
prizes. Senior teams required scullers from four different categories,
junior teams three. Henley, the host club, had four category winners in
their senior men's team, D. Read (Sen 1), M. Lambourn (Sen 2) R. Guiver (Sen
3) and R. Wilson (Vet B), their combined time was 52 minutes 45 seconds.
Upper Thames were second with 53.50 and Marlow third with 54.33. Henley
where second in both the Women's and Junior Womens team prize.
