Hampton Small Boats Head

Henley Rowing Clubs junior girls had a successful trip to Hampton Head last week end where they notched up another two wins and some very commendable second place medals as well as a good all round performance from all those that competed.

Hampton is most probably the major small boats head in the south for juniors with all the major clubs and schools competing over the 3000 metre course which starts just down stream of Sunbury Lock. Despite concerns from the weather forecast conditions on the day where good with a tail wind that was not strong enough to cause any problems.

Both wins came from the under girls J15 squad in the morning division the quad of Chantal Cummings, Ailsa Buck, Pippa Whittaker, Maddie Wheal and cox Claire Boyd beat 15 other crews finishing 8 seconds ahead of second place Lady Eleanor Holles School who had the advantage of rowing on their home water. In the afternoon Chantal and Pippa competed in J15 single sculls with Chantal taking first place with very impressive scull which saw her overtaking a number of older girls in the division ahead of her. Her finishing time of 12:06 was enough to put her in eighth place of all the girls competing.

At J16 level Jenny Arnold just missed out on first place in her single scull when she finished second by three tenths of a second to Burgess of the Dame Alice Harpur School Bedford. This was a very strong division with the top three girls of the 32 competitors all having recently competed in selection trials for the coming years Great Britain squad and having finished at the top end of the trials. With partner Emily Derrig Jenny also picked up second place in J16 doubles behind Heading school. In the same category the very lightweight double of Alice Skinner and Raffie Varley sculled exceptionally well to also finish well up the order.
