HAMPTON FOURS AND EIGHTS

This week end saw Henley Rowing Clubs Junior Girls having their first race of this year when they competed at Hampton Fours and Eights Head. The event is held over a 3000 metre course downstream from Sunbury Lock to Hampton Church and this year in excess of 170 Junior crews competed in eights, quads or coxed fours. Henley had five crews entered three quads a coxed four and a first for the Club an octuple (eight scullers as opposed to eight sweep oar). The octuple has looked good in training and expectations where that a win was possible, however despite a very good first half a broken seat made racing in the second part of the course virtually impossible but despite this the crew of Caroline Brocklebank, Hermione Lake, Wilson, Gemma Hall, Becky Norman, Bryony Stephens, Amy Fitzgibbon, and Laura Robinson finished a commendable second behind Lady Eleanor Holles School. Another second place was notched up by the Junior Coxed four of Emily Derrig, Kate Chapman, Kelly Whittaker, Hanna Blair and cox Maddie Wheal. The girls three of whom are only J16s finished 7 seconds behind Bedford High School but 36 seconds ahead of third place Lady Eleanor Holles and 1 minute ahead of the crew that won the J16 division.

The Gold Medallists of the day where the J16 quad of Jenny Arnold, Chantal Cummings, Orla Millar and Alice Skinner. The girls sculled and raced well to the extent that local rivals Sir William Borlase who finished second where 20 seconds behind them. This weekend the girls will be competing in the Henley Fours and Eights Head organised by the Henley Rowing Club and will be looking to repeat the success
