MAIDENHEAD JNR REGATTA

On what turned out to be a hot sunny day with only light winds providing almost perfect conditions, Henley’s Junior 13 & 14 Squad excelled themselves at Maidenhead Junior regatta on Sunday by winning five of the events entered.

The invitation event had two ability categories for each age group, Beginner for crews who are new to rowing and Club for those that have had some racing experience. With a repechage draw for all events it meant each crew had to race at least three or fours times to win. The 500 metre course was a sprint event which meant a fast start and a high stroke rate were essential. For almost all those taking part it was their first introduction to competitive regatta racing and it will prove to be an invaluable experience as the regatta season gets under way in earnest. Henley’s wins were in Beginner and Club categories for both the Women Junior13 and WJ14 events. In WJ14 A crew were Georgie Dodwell, Maddy Wheal, Chantelle Cummings, Claire Boyd, cox Natasha Delarange and in the B crew, Pippa Whittaker, Ailsa Buck, Maria Tross, Rebecca Clark and cox J. Brooker. The WJ13 A crew included Joanne Moore, Liz Blaire, Hermione Lake, Jemma Hall, cox Ashlene O’Brien and the B crew, Florence Lock, Caroline Brocklebank, Abby Stevens, Kate Thomas with cox Lauren Hillyer. Henley also won the mixed Junior15 Beginners event with a crew who were sculling together for the first time. The wins were a tribute to the many hours put in by the WJ13 & 14 coaches and the hard work and dedication of the girls during the long winter training period.
