NATIONAL SCHOOLS REGATTA
Last weekend saw Henley Rowing Club crews competing at The National Schools Regatta in Nottingham, the major junior regatta in the rowing calendar. The event is held over three days with different events on each day with each event being run to a final on that day. This year the Saturday events where cancelled after strong winds created rough water resulting in a number of crews sinking.
Fridays races are held over a 1000 metre course and are aimed at the younger crews. Henley Rowing Clubs Under 14 girls quad Chantal Cummings, Claire Boyd, Georgie Dodwell, Maddie Wheal and cox Sophie Wheal won their eliminating round and finished third in the semi final. The under 15 boys Oliver Wimshurst and Alex Hall competed in the double sculls and whilst up there with the leaders for a significant part of the race fell back to finish fifth in their eliminating round. Saturdays cancelled races included the key events for the Henley crews who would have been competing in Girls Junior Coxed fours, Girls under 15 quadruple Sculls and Boys Under 16 quadruple sculls where they all would have been anticipating achieving a medal position. Sunday saw these athletes competing in events they would consider to be less favoured in. The girls under 15 quad of Ellen Anthony, Jenny Arnold, Orla Millar and Emily Derrig moved up to J16 coxless quads to compete against girls older than themselves. Despite the age disadvantage the girls comfortably won their eliminating round and reached the final after achieving a third place position in the semi final. In the final the girls got off to a slow start and at the 1000 metre half way mark where in fourth place two lengths down on the third place crew. A determined fight back saw this gap narrowed such that the second third and fourth place crews where overlapping at the finish with the younger Henley girls unfortunately still in fourth place but comfortably ahead of Headington BC and Worcester RC. The Girls J16 Coxed Four Hannah Blair, Natasha Richardson, Kate Chapman, Raffie Varley and cox Alice Skinner had a very impressive win in their eliminating round. Their semi final round saw all five crews overlapping at the finish with the last crews time being faster than all but the winning boat in the other semi final. The Henley crew lost out on the cut for the final despite patently being faster than a number of crews who did. Junior Girls Lucy Lewington and Hannah Read competed in Championship Pairs as did Becci Griffiths and Caitlin Bennett. Becci and Caitlin finished fourth in their semi final behind three pairs that are likely to make this years Junior World Championships and this performance will have helped Beccis and Caitlins chances of selection for the GB squad. The medal of the Championships came from the under 16 boys. The quad of Peter Wagner, Tom Pocock, Drew Ford and Chris Clark splitting up to race in J16 doubles an event with a very large entry of 26 crews. Both crews where successful in the eliminating rounds and made it into the semi finals. Tom and Peter finished third in their semi and Drew and Chris second in theirs with only two crews from each of the three semis to go through to the final. The Final proved to be a spectacular race at 500 metres less than 2 seconds separated the first four crews at 1000 metre 2 seconds separated the first four crews with Drew and Chris in fourth place. At 1500 metres the leading crew Tideway Scullers had pulled out a half length lead over Molesey who where less than half a length ahead of Durham and Henley who where neck and neck in third place. With 250 metres to go both Henley and Durham started to up the rate the Henley boys hitting 42 strokes a second and just starting to nudge ahead of Durham and to close on Molesey. With a 100 metres to go the rate was 44 and Durham where falling back but Molesey was being pulled in by the Henley boys as where Tideway Scullers. At the line Tideway Scullers held on for the Gold, Molesey for the Silver and Henley the Bronze.
