Upper Thames SBH &
Henley Sculls Combined Report

Since the start of the rowing season in September Henley Rowing Club crews have notched up an outstanding thirty eight wins. Twenty eight of these have come in the last two weekends thirteen at the Upper Thames Small Boats Head where for the second year running the Club won the Victor Ludorum Trophy for the most successful club at the event. Almost unbelievably the Club topped this with fifteen wins at last weekends Henley Sculls where again it was the most successful club and also winner of the men’s team prize. The wins have come from all sections of the Club with the senior men, senior women, junior men and junior women all contributing to the success.

The senior men were the fastest crew at the Henley sculls with the winning Senior 2 quad which was faster than the winning Elite quad and were winners of 4 of the 5 men’s sculling events. Richard Guiver winning Novices, Jasper Hassel Senior 3, David Read Senior 2 and Richard Griffiths Senior 1.

The senior women’s squad provided the fastest women’s crew at both Upper Thames Small Boats Head and The Henley Sculls.  Laura Leondiades, Caroline Hocking, Kate Pankhurst and Victoria Wood were dominant in Senior 2 Quads at both events, winning by 17 seconds and 33 seconds respectively.  Kate and Victoria also won Senior 2 Doubles and Laura and Caroline were joined by Katharine Boothroyd and Kaye Davies to win Senior 3 Quads at Upper Thames.

Teaming up with Natalie Robinson, Becci Griffiths, Natalie McIntosh and Caitlin Bennett the girls have also been part of crews that have won fours and doubles events at both Junior and Senior level over recent weeks with Natalie Robison also winning the Women’s Novice sculls at the Henley Sculls.

The younger section of the club have also been successful with the girls J15 quad (Jenny Arnold, Orla Millar,Emily Derrig and cox Heather Elliott), J14 Quad (alternating between Maddie Wheal, Georgi Dodwell, Becci Clarke, Ailsa Buck, Claire Boyd, Chantel Cummings, Natashe De Lange and cox Sophie Wheal) and J13 quad (Hermione Lake, Joe Moore, Liz Blair, Sarah Lee Marachesi cox S Anthony)  winning their categories at every event they have competed at. At last weekends Henley Sculls Jenny Arnold as well as contributing to the J15 quad win also won the J15 single sculls in a time that saw her beating many older girls women and boys. This section of the Club is particularly strong at the moment with over 20 girls competing at this level.

The Junior boys have also been very successful with wins at all the Head races over the last few weeks. At the Reading Small Boats Head a few weeks ago the J16 quad of Chris Clarke, Drew Ford, Simon Jones and Peter Wagner not only won their division but were the fastest boat at the event. The boys also won the Upper Thames J16 quads with Tom Pocock replacing Simon Jones. For the Henley Sculls all the boys took to their sculling boats to see who was the fastest and on this occasion Drew Ford came out on top as well as being the overall J16 winner.
