Henley Royal Regatta

At 12:56.35 on the 3rd July 2005  Johnny Smith Willis,David Lambourn , David Read, Nick Friend, Ariel Perez Calderon, Jasper Hasell, Charles Friend, Richard Guiver, Avery Penna, Coach Ian Desmond went down in History as Henley Rowing Clubs first winners of an open event at Henley Royal Regatta beating Lady Elizabeth Boat Club, Ireland in the final by 1 length.

The Final was reached after a 1 3/4 length victory on Wednesday over Furnivall, a 1 length win over Reading Rowing Club on Thursday, A nail biting third of a length defeat of Nott's County on Friday,  and Saturday a 1 1/2 length beating of London RC "A" crew.

Whilst this will be recorded as the first open win for Henley, David Read won a Fawley Cup medal in 2003 rowing in a composite crew but as the archaic rules of HRR don't allow more than two club names to appear in recording the wins of composite crews Henley's name does not appear in the HRR records. A win in a restricted event the Town Cup for local fours was recorded in 1878.

Prior to this  the closest the Club had been to a Henley Medal was in  1976 when they  reached the final of the Thames Cup but lost by a canvas feet to Harvard. Many of that defeated crew where at Henley on Sunday to share in this victory. The Club also reached the final of the Thames Cup in 1925

The  Thames Challenge Cup was instituted for eight-oars in 1868, and attracted entries from home and overseas crews of "club", rather than "Grand", standard.  From 1985 there were a number of rule changes for the "Thames", each attempting to ensure that the best club and student crews entered the higher event, the "Ladies".   After a two year review the Stewards, in December 1995, made fundamental changes to the rules of the "Thames" and excluded all student crews.   In addition the event now has a number of other exclusions, with the intention of ensuring that the "Thames" is an event for "genuine" club crews from all over the world. Previous winners have include crews from the USA Canada and numerous European countries

The Club was also represented at the regatta with three other crews. The Fawley Cup crew of Tom Pocock, Peter Wagner, Drew Ford and Chris Clark. The Mens Quadruple Scull of M Griffiths, R Wilson, R Kennedy (Taurus Boat Club) and M Lambourn and in the Wyfold Challenge Cup for coxless fours N Mead, A Jones, R Barnes and S Brown who won through to Friday of the regatta but were beaten by the Army RC eventual winners of the event.
