GHENT

Henley Rowing Club Senior men’s squad continue to make good progress in preparation for the Royal Regatta winning Elite Eight’s at Nottingham City regatta and finishing 4th in the Open Eight’s event at the Belgian International regatta at Ghent. There were nineteen entries in this top international event which included Leander, Oxford Brookes and the Belgian U23 National team. Ian Desmond, the senior men’s coach said the town should be very proud that the club is competing at this level with six members of the 1st Eight having learnt to row at Henley and he welcomes the town’s support for the coming Royal Regatta. He was also very pleased with the solid and competitive performance of the Senior Men’s Cox’less Four at Nottingham and Ghent against top opposition. The 1st Eight’s next race will be the Metropolitan regatta to be held at the six lane Dorney Lake on 4th & 5th June.

Meanwhile the Senior Women’s Squad were also in action at Ghent and after a difficult introduction to a new form of racing on Saturday, when they just missed out on qualification for the final, Katherine Pankhurst and Caroline Hocking made amends on Sunday with a silver medal in Women’s Senior A Double Sculls.  The winning crew, from Commercial Rowing Club, Dublin had proved invincible all weekend, but the Henley Double raced well to beat all the UK competition including a fast finishing Marlow Rowing Club double. Later Kate and Caroline were joined by Suzanne Riley and Kaye Davies, in a quad that was a mixture of youth and experience, to finish just outside the medals in fourth place in the final of Senior A Quad Sculls.

The Junior girls of Lucy Lewington, Hannah Read, Becci Griffiths and Caitlin Bennett raced in a combination of pairs and fours over the two days of Ghent Regatta and where successful in every event returning with three Bronze medals and a Silver, what was very promising was that the only crews to beat the Henley girls where composite crews from the British and Dutch National squads. The Junior Boys were also represented winning Bronze in the J18 Quad Sculls on Saturday and a further Bronze in J16 Quads on the Sunday.
