Egham Regatta
Henley
Juniors were in action again last Sunday at Egham Regatta and proved once
more that they are arguably the strongest junior squad on the Thames this
year, winning a total of four events. The Junior 13 Quadruple Scull of
Florence Lock, Caroline Brocklebank, Abby Stevens, Kate Thomas and cox
Lauren Hillyer had to race four times to win their event beating Kingston by
2 lengths in the final. The Junior 13 Double Scull of Liz Blaire and Jemma
Hall won their 2 heats and went on to beat Tideway Scullers School in that
final by a length. Not
to be out done by the J13’s Henley’s Junior 14 squad entered two Quads
and three Double Sculls. The J14 B crew won their first heat convincingly
but narrowly lost to finalists, Molesey Schools Rowing Association in the
quarter finals. The B crew of Rebecca Clark, Maria, Ailsa Buck, Pippa
Whittaker and Jess Broker, cox where all beginners this year and have
improved significantly with each regatta and have greatly surpassed
expectations. Honour was satisfied when the J14 A crew of Natasha de Lange,
Georgie Dodwell, Chantel Cummings, Maddie Wheal and cox Sofie Wheal met
Molesey, beating them comfortably in the final. The two quads then split into three J14 Double Sculls. Pippa Whittaker and Ailsa Buck, racing in a double for the very first time won their first heat easily but lost against a very good Staines crew in the quarter finals. It was then the turn of Maddie Wheal and Georgie Dodwell to take on the Staines double in the semi-final. With only 50 metres to go Maddie & Georgie led Stains by ¼ length but the crews clashed in neutral water and the race was re-rowed with Staines winning by 1/3 length. Finally, it was Chantel Cummings & Claire Boyd’s turn to tackle Staines in the final and in a thrillingly close race Chantel and Claire beat Staines by a canvass to win the J14 Double Sculls event.
