HAMPTON SMALL BOATS HEAD
Henley Rowing Clubs Junior squad had a successful days
racing at last Saturdays Hampton Small Boats Head. Hampton is one of the
major head races for juniors and gives a good indication of where crews
stand. Saturdays race was held over the usual 3000 metre downstream course
but in very wet and windy conditions that varied throughout the day. The
better conditions in the afternoon giving those that raced in the second
division a clear advantage over those in the morning.
The J15 boys came away with three wins Chris Clarke,
Drew Ford, Simon Jones and Peter Wagner with cox Hannah Boyd winning J15
quads being one of the very few crews from the first division to win a
medal. In the afternoon Drew and Simon went on to win J15 double sculls and
Peter J15 single sculls.
Whilst the Junior girls did not notch up any wins
Natalie McIntosh got a well deserved medal for second place in J16 single
sculls as did Natalie Robinson for second place in the J17 single sculls,
Becci Griffiths coming home in third place. Another second and third placing
came in the girls under 17 pairs for Hanna Smith Willis and Lucy Lewington
and Kaye Davies and Natalie Robinson. Good results for both these crews
racing for the first time in this class of boat.
Whilst the juniors got a good but wet days racing in
the senior members of the Club where not so lucky. The Scullers Head of the
River Race on the tideway was cancelled due to conditions on the river five
minutes before the race was due to start and after all the crews had boated.
With many crews coming from overseas and all the crews having got up at the
crack of dawn to be there for the 9am start this was a major disappointment.
