BURWAY SMALL BOATS HEAD

click to enlargeHenley Rowing Clubs junior squad continued it’s successful head racing season with 3 wins by the boy’s at Hampton Small Boats Head two weeks ago and this weekend the girls and boys notched up 8 wins at Burway Small Boats Head. The Burway Head is held in 3 divisions over a 3000 metre course that requires some navigational skills as well as the ability to row or scull well.

The boys under 15 quad of Simon Jones, Drew Ford, Chris Clarke, Peter Wagner and cox Hannah Boyd won their event comfortably 14 seconds ahead of nearest rivals Windsor Boys School. Drew and Chris then went on to win the under 15 double sculls event with an even bigger margin of 26 seconds despite a few steering problems.

Hannah Smith Willis and Lucy Lewington picked up two wins, winning both the under 18 double sculls and under 18 pairs. In both events they where the fastest women’s crew.

Hannah Read won the women’s novice sculls with another Henley sculler Kaye Davies 3 seconds behind in second place. Natalie McIntosh won the girls under 16 sculls and Becci Griffiths the women's senior 4 sculls. Becci was also the fastest women sculler.

The eighth win came fro the girls under 13 quad of Georgie Dodwell, Becci Clarke, Chantel Cummings, Claire Boyd and cox Hannah Boyd. The girls beating their closest rivals by over 31 seconds and local rivals Maidenhead by over a minute. This was a very good win for the girls competing in only their third race and who coped well in the difficult blustery conditions.

Also competing at the weekend was David Read who took part in trials for the Great Britain under 23 squad and finished a very commendable ninth. The previous week David had helped Henley Rowing Clubs senior men’s four to win Senior 2 coxless fours at Wallingford Head. The crew was also the second fastest four just one second behind a Thames RC Senior 1 four.
