Wallingford Long Distance Sculls
SIX WINS FOR HENLEY ROWING CLUB! After a short summer break from competition, Henley Rowing Club’s highly successful women, juniors and veterans were back in action last Saturday at Wallingford Long Distance Sculls the first of the autumn Thames Long Distance sculling races. In weather that was more appropriate to a mid summer regatta, the Club came away with six trophies. With ambitions of international selection next year and with the first national trials in 3 weeks, it was important for Lucy Mills to have a good start to the new season. Her performance exceeded even her coach’s expectations, only Olympic silver medallist Guin Batten recording a faster time among women competitors. Lucy’ time for the 4000 metre course of 16min 21sec placed her top of the Senior 2 division and 80th overall of the 289 single scullers who completed the course and beat all the Club’s male scullers who competed with the exception of David Read who won the Junior Division in equally emphatic style, by 29 seconds in a time of 15min 28sec, which placed him 29th overall. The junior women kept up their recent record of success with two wins. Hannah Smith Willis, Natalie Robinson, Lucy Lewington and Rebecca Griffiths came home first in Junior Quads by 19 seconds from the second Henley crew. In Junior 16 Doubles Hannah Read and Natalie Robinson had an even greater margin of victory, beating Sir William Borlase by 49 seconds and local rivals Maidenhead and Upper Thames by over a minute. The Junior 14 men’s Quad Simon Jones, Drew Ford, Chris Clarke, Peter Wagner and cox Hannah Boyd continued the impressive start to their rowing career with a win in their first head race. With the core of the Club’s successful older boys moving to just below the Bridge it is reassuring to know that there are some talented youngsters coming up behind. At the other end of the age spectrum, Tim Lincoln, multiple champion at the recent World Masters Regatta, won the handicap single sculls event for those aged 60 and above in a time of 17 min 26 sec. The club also had a half share in another event, Ian Giuliani winning Veteran D doubles in partnership with Tom Skinner of Upper Thames.
