Henley Womens Regatta
This was a busy weekend for Henley Rowing
Club with crews competing at three regattas. It was also very successful
with eight wins and some very creditable performances against top class
opposition. The top regatta was of course Henley Women's Regatta where the
club had a number of crews competing. The most successful was the women's
double of Lucy Mills and Juliet Hookey competing for the first time this
year at senior women's.
After three years of dominance in the junior sculling events at Henley
Women's Regatta, Juliet and Lucy took a very large step up last weekend to
compete in the Open Double Sculls event. At nineteen years old a win
in this event would have been remarkable, but the girls went into the
Regatta with high hopes after wins at the Metropolitan and Docklands
Regattas.
On Saturday Juliet and Lucy had two relatively comfortable races,
disposing of local rivals Marlow in the first round and a University of
East Anglia/Thames Tradesmen composite in the second. In the
semi-final on Sunday morning however, a hard fought race saw them beat
Wallingford by 1 &1/2 lengths. The other finalists, Loughborough
RC had a much easier passage to the final, with a first round bye and the
withdrawal of their semi-final opponents due to illness. In a
closely fought final, Loughborough just held off a late challenge from
Henley to win an exciting race by 1& 1/2 lengths in a time of 5 mins
45 secs.
In Open Single sculls, Caroline Hocking reached the semi-final in some
style only to come up against Olympic silver medallist Guin Batten.
In the early part of the race Caroline hung on well, but the extra power
of her opponent told and the result, as in all her races, was a
comfortable win for Batten. Henley Rowing Club Senior Women's Squad are
grateful to "Exclusively Ladies" for their support this season.
Two junior quads also competed and gave good performances. The B
crew of Rachel Dadds, Gemma Mcintosh, Melanie Gilson and Hannah Smith
Willis meeting the eventual winners Lady Eleanor Holles in their first
race. The "A" crew Bethan Thomas, Louisa Pickworth, Sarah
Fellowes and Lucy Lewington comfortably beat Kingston Grammar School in
their first race but in the second round lost to a composite Irish crew
after some unfortunate steering and some bad blade work cost them the
lead.
