Junior Inter Regional Regatta

Fifteen of Henley Rowing Clubs junior girls squad travelled to Nottingham at the weekend to represent Thames West in the Junior Inter Regional Regatta. Thames West were victorious in the regatta with the Henley girls making a significant contribution returning with one gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

The gold medal came from the under 15 quad of Becci Griffiths, Kaye Davies, Hannah Read, Lucy Lewington and cox Nicola Johnson. The girls were the first race of the day and could not have given Thames West a better start to the regatta, they took the lead from the start of the race and by 500 metres already had nearly a two length lead by the 1000 metres this had extended to over 5 lengths and finished 23 seconds ahead of the crew from the North East Region.

The silver medal was won by the under 16 quad of Hannah Boyd, Kate Osborn-Jones, Gemma McIntosh and Melanie Gilson. The girls got off to a good start but by the 500 metre mark Royal Chester representing the West Region had just nosed ahead by half a length. By a thousand metres this had extended to a length but from here the Henley girls held them and whilst they started to close on them in the last 250 had left themselves to much to do and had to settle for second place. Some consolation came though from the fact that they beat Wycliffe representing the South West and who had previously beaten the Henley girls at the Schools Head.

The Bronze medal was won by Becci Varley, Amanda Moore, Caroline Green and Hannah Smith Willis racing in the under 16 coxless fours. This was a good result for what was effectively a scratch crew with Amanda only stepping into the crew on Saturday morning. The girls surprised themselves with a very good start and remained in contention for most of the race and only in the last 500 fell behind the crews from the East and South East but remained well clear of fourth placed South West Region.

Gemma Johnson and Natalie Robinson competed in the under 15 double sculls and for Natalie this was her first major race. The girls raced well and at the thousand metre mark where in equal third place with the eventual winners from the West Region. From here though West Region powered through the field to take the gold medal whilst the Henley girls where pipped at the post by SouthWest to leave them in fifth place.
