Henley Rowing Clubs junior girls’ squad had a
successful trip to Abingdon Head on Sunday returning with four outright
wins and six-second places. Rowed over a winding 2200metre course upstream
it is not the easiest of courses for either coxless or coxed boats. The
advantages to be gained by good steering was well demonstrated in the
girls Junior 14 crew who going in to the tight second bend where a length
down on the crew in front but came out of the bend half a length up. This
gave the crew of Lucy Lewington, Rebecca Varley, Maggie Reinhard, Kay
Davis and cox Rebecca Griffiths their first win with a considerable margin
over the other crews. Roger Stephens won Elite sculls with a time of 15:23 which broke the previous course record. six second behind in second place was doubles partner Rob Wilson. In the doubles they had no competion at Elite status but finished well clear of all the other doubles and set another course record of 14:02. Henley RC boys have been busy over the last couple of weekends with Teddington Sculls and the Junior Long Distance Trials at Peterborough. Teddington Sculls, over a 4000metre course from Hampton Court to Kingston Bridge took place in ideal conditions with a reasonable stream, slight tail wind and sunshine. Jonny Smith-Willis took the honours, winning the J15 singles division by 15 secs from Zakrewski of Tideway Scullers with Ryan Davies in 3rd place. Rob Friend was 3rd in the J16 singles division in a time 8secs behind Smith-Wills with Simon Thompson in 8th place. GB Junior Trials After a quiet period of training but no racing over the past two months, the Henley RC boys have been back in action again. Five boys in the squad recently took part in the annual Thames Valley Oarsmen’s Cross-Country Race over a muddy 3½ mile course in Windsor Great Park. Nick Friend finished 7th overall from the 190 runners with Rob Friend in 46th place, Dorian Weber 57th, Ryan Davies 66th and Simon Thompson 69th. The first of the new year Head Races was Hampton 4s and 8s held over a 3000 metre downstream course between Sunbury and Molesey Locks. The boys were entered in a J16 coxless quad (Simon Thompson, Jonny Smith-Willis, Rob Friend and Ryan Davies) and in a fast time of 8 mins 50 secs, took 2nd place in their division behind Dulwich College beating local rivals Sir William Borlase’s and Windsor Boys School by 5 secs and 14 secs respectively. Last Saturday a different combination entered as a J18 coxless quad in Henley 4s and 8s Head over an upstream 3000 metre course. The result was a comfortable win for the crew of Simon Thompson, Rob Friend, Dorian Weber and Nick Friend. Jonny Smith-Willis, Nick Friend and Dorian Weber and are now turning their attention to single sculls for the forthcoming GB Junior Trials being held at Kingston tomorrow (12th February) attempting to earn an invitation to the Easter Junior Squad assessments at Nottingham.
27/11/99 Hampton Head Henley boys won the Hampton Small Boats Head on Saturday by a margin of 5 secs. Nick Friend and Dorien Weber (racing as Maidenhead RC) started first in the Junior Double Sculls division and in flat, calm conditions had a superb row to take the junior doubles title and the fastest crew overall. Both boys had earlier in the day raced in Junior singles, Dorien finishing 6th and Nick 7th from the 25 starters Ryan Davies repeated his Pangbourne Sculls performance by taking 2nd place in the Junior 15 singles and Rob Friend joined Colin Smith from Star and Arrow Club in the Junior 16 double sculls finishing in 3rd place. Rob had earlier raced in the J16 singles as had Simon Thompson, Rob finishing 8th and Simon 32nd out of 48 starters. 21/11/99 Fours Head Henley RC boys produced a convincing performance in last Saturday’s Fours Head of the River Race on the Tideway over the 4¼ mile reverse Boat Race course from Chiswick to Putney to finish 82nd overall from the 550 entries. Starting 118th the quad scull crew of Rob Friend (bow steers), Dorien Weber, Jonny Smith Willis and Nick Friend were well positioned with other crews pushing them all the way. They coped well in the strong head wind in the middle of the course drawing away from the chasing Wycliffe College crew but in the last mile hadn’t enough left to raise their rate which enabled Wycliffe to come back on them. Within the Junior Division the Henley crew finished 5th out of 32. The quad has only recently been put together, racing at Henley Sculls three weeks earlier but in the meantime putting their energies into singles. All four of the quad had recently competed at Peterborough in the first trial for GB selection with Dorien Weber and Nick Friend both finishing in the top 20 scullers. 13/11/99 Pangbourne Sculls Whilst a number of Henley Rowing Clubs junior girls went to Peterborough to start this seasons round of trials for selection to the Great Britain squad the remainder stayed closer to home and competed in the Pangbourne Sculls. The Pangbourne Sculls is held over a 3000 metre course downstream, adjacent to Beale Park and attracts a large Junior contingent with over 300 crews competing this weekend. In the morning session three Henley crews competed, Anna Evans, Kirsty Scott, Carly Ralph, Anna Smith in Women's Junior quads, Sarah Fellowes, Jenni Desmond, Lucy Pratt, and Fran Compton in the Women's Junior 16 quads and Katharine Boothroyd and Lindsay Nowak in Women's Junior Doubles. All three crews sculled very well and all won their divisions comfortably the J16 beating the second crew in their division Sir William Borlases of Marlow by over a minute. In the afternoon the girls all raced in single sculls at either J18 or J16 level and again the Henley crews dominated their divisions. At J18 four of the Henley girls where in the top five with Anna Evans winning the division outright in a time of 12:51, third was Lindsay 13:16, Katharine was fourth 13:22 and Kirsty fifth 13:26. In the J16 category Henley took the top two places Jenni Desmond winning in 13:35 just a second ahead of Sarah Fellowes. Also competing in the afternoon were two girls J15 quads whilst neither crew won they have made considerable improvement over recent weeks and the margin between them and the winning crews at this age group is narrowing rapidly. Ryan Davies and Simon Thompson raced in singles at Pangbourne Junior Sculls, Ryan returning with a silver medal in the boys J15 singles. 30/10/99 Henley
Sculls In Saturdays Henley Sculls the Junior Girls who started late in the afternoon had to race into a howling gale, strong enough to stop cyclists on the tow path, and which bounced their sculling boats all over the water that was being churned up by the wind. That all the girls completed the course was a commendable effort in its self. Even more so was the performance of Henley’s 13 year old Claire Huntington who competing in her first sculling race won the Junior 13 event in a time off 23.27 and with a remarkable 92 second lead over her nearest rival. Juliet Hookey with a time of 17.32 finished second in the Junior 18 Girls division behind K Greves of Headington, who was one of last years Great Britain squad, both these two being well clear of the rest of the Junior girls. Not far behind Juliet but competing at Women’s Senior 3 level was Claire Ansley-Watson who finished with a time of 17.44 also in this division was Lindsay Nowak whose time was 18.35. Competing in the novice division Katharine Boothroyd was third in a time of 18.26 behind girls from the senior women’s squads of Marlow and Thames Rowing Club. Also competing in the Junior Girls division was Lizzie Mann and Kirsty Scott with times of 18.44 and 18.53. Bronwen Steele in the Junior 16 division finished in a time of 19.38. In the morning session in much better conditions the junior girls were unlucky not to win any division but came second in four events, J Desmond & S Fellowes in WJ 16 doubles; B Thomas & R Varley in the WJ 15 doubles: C Huntington & K Davies in the WJ 14 doubles and L Pickworth L Darke M Reinhard K Robinson in the WJ 15 quads, in virtually all cases being beaten by their rivals from Headington School Oxford. 24/10/99 Upper Thames Small Boats Head On Sunday it was the turn of the Henley Reach for the Upper Thames Small Boats Head. Henley entered two double scull crews – Nick Friend and Dorien Weber winning the Junior 18 division and Jonny Smith-Willis and Ryan Davies the J15 division. 23/10/99 Marlow Long Distance Sculls The girls competed last week at Marlow Long Distance sculls, which at 5000 metres upstream is one of the longer Sculling Head courses. Again in not the best of conditions the girls all did well especially Kirsty Holland who won the Junior 18 Sculls and Bronwen Steele who won the J16 Division With school half term starting last weekend only two of the boys were available to race at Marlow Long Distance Sculls. Raced over 4400 metres upstream Rob Friend and Jonny Smith-Willis had their work cut out fighting a head wind and rain as well as the stream last Saturday but both came home worth winners - Rob Friend winning the J16 division and Jonny Smith-Willis the J15 division. 2/10/99 Wallingford Head Henley Rowing Clubs Junior girls’ squad made an impressive start to the new season with 5 wins at Wallingford Long Distance Sculls. Wallingford is the first major head of the season and with a course of 4,000 metres upstream one of the longest. Following the recent heavy rains the stream was particularly strong and was not helped by the strong blustery following winds with the female scullers, with one or two exceptions taking in excess of twenty minutes to complete the course. The fastest of the Henley girls was Juliet Hookey with a time of 20.17 and was also the fastest junior girls time of the day. Not far behind was Bronwyen Steele with a time of 20.38 which earned her the prize for fastest under 16 sculler. The other girls who competed in the single sculls where Lizzie Mann (20.57), Anna Smith (21.13), Kirsty Scott (21.41) and Fran Compton (21.54). In the morning session a number of the girls raced in double sculls. Lucy Mills and Kirsty Holland competed and won in the women’s senior 2 category with a time of 18.08 the fastest women’s time of the day, beating a number of the men’s and junior boys’ crews. In the younger age group of J16 Sarah Fellowes and Jenny Desmond had a time of 19.52 giving them a well deserved victory over a relatively large field. Anna Evans and Juliet Hookey competed in the J18 double sculls and their time of 18.45 placed them second in this division. The fifth win for the girls came in the Junior quads where Lissie Mann, Kirsty Scott, Lindsay Nowak and Katharine Boothroyd had a comfortably victory in a time of 17.35 beating their nearest rivals by over a minute. Henley RC Boys successful at Wallingford Long Distance Sculls The first of the autumn long distance sculling races took place at Wallingford last Saturday over a 4 Km upstream course. With a strong cross tailwind, the conditions were none too pleasant, but did not deter the Henley boys from top class performances. Rob Friend won the Junior 16 Division and Jonny Smith-Willis the Junior 15 Division with Ryan Davies in 2nd place. Nick Friend finished 27th out of the 220 scullers to take 2nd place in the Junior 18 Division, beating Barron, his partner in last season’s successful double, by 4 secs. 19/09/99 Boston Marathon The Boston Marathon is one of those events that rowers feel they ought to do once. This year a Henley RC quad scull crew raced the 31 mile course and won the Senior 3 Division by 11 minutes in a time of 4 hours 7 minutes to finish 3rd overall. The crew was a little unusual in that it contained three brothers - Nick Friend, Rob Friend and Charles Friend with Andrew Cruickshank at bow. Andrew had raced the marathon last year in an Oratory School crew, so had the useful experience of knowing the course. Rowed from Lincoln to Boston, the whole course was raced straight into a strong South Easterly wind which accounted for the rather slow times. Starting near the back of the field of 150 crews and scullers the Henley quad made steady progress passing other crews until they reached the final 5 Km when a St Neots RC elite quad caught and passed them. Visibly tiring over the final 3 Km straight stretch into Boston they still managed to find enough energy to raise their rate to catch an eight on the line .
